Route Description

SUMMARY

The first day of your tour in Genova begins with an itinerary in the Porto Antico, discovering one of the most lively and iconic areas of the city, surrounded by the sea, museums and panoramic attractions. The route, compact and entirely walkable, covers 2,9 km and has a total visit duration of 8 hours.

Among the must-see stops are the Acquario di Genova, the Bigo panoramic lift, the Biosfera by Renzo Piano and the Galata Museo del Mare.

Expand STEP DETAIL ⬇️

⬇️ starting point

X. Porto Antico

The journey begins in the beating heart of Genoese tourism: the Porto Antico. Once the hub of maritime trade of the Republic of Genoa.

❌ Avoid the 13:00–15:00 time slot: this is the peak tourist period and the area becomes very crowded, especially when cruise ships or organized groups are present.

❌ Do not underestimate internal walking times: distances between stops may seem short, but breaks, photos, and pedestrian flow can easily extend your visit.

⬇️

A. FantaCinema

The first stop is dedicated to movie lovers: the FantaCinema, an interactive museum dedicated to the world of fantasy and science fiction cinema. Here you can admire props, costumes, and memorabilia from cult films such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and many more. Perfect for diving into the magic of cinema!

⬇️

B. Ruota Panoramica di Genova

After a dose of fantasy, it’s time to admire Genoa from above by riding the Ruota Panoramica. Located just a few steps from the Aquarium, it offers a spectacular view over the Porto Antico, the historic center, and the sea. An unmissable experience, especially at sunset, when the sky fills with breathtaking colors.

⬇️

C. Bigo e ascensore panoramico

We continue with another panoramic experience: the Bigo, a structure inspired by ancient Genoese port cranes, designed by Renzo Piano. This panoramic elevator, rising up to 40 meters high, offers a 360Β° view of the city and the harbor. A perfect opportunity to take spectacular photos and admire the beauty of Genoa from above.

⬇️

D. Acquario di Genova

One of the city’s most famous attractions, the Acquario di Genova hosts over 12,000 specimens belonging to more than 600 different species. From sharks and dolphins to penguins and sea turtles, the Aquarium route allows visitors to immerse themselves in marine biodiversity, with spectacular tanks and settings. An educational and fascinating experience for both adults and children.

✨ The Acquario di Genova is an immersive journey through giant tanks that feel like a direct window into the oceans.

❌ Allow more than 90 minutes: it is a highly immersive visit and often exceeds expectations, which is why we allocated 150 minutes in the schedule.

⬇️

E. Biosfera o Bolla di Renzo Piano

Just a few steps from the Aquarium is the striking Biosfera, a spherical structure made of glass and steel designed by Renzo Piano. Inside, a tropical ecosystem has been recreated with exotic plants, birds, and butterflies, offering an immersive nature experience. A true slice of rainforest in the heart of Genoa!

⬇️

F. Galata Museo del Mare

The final stop of the day is the Galata Museo del Mare, the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. Here you can discover the history of Genoese seafaring, admire ancient vessels, and try interactive experiences such as simulating a sea storm.

Outside the museum, for an even more engaging experience, you can visit the Sommergibile Nazario Sauro, a real submarine of the Italian Navy, set up to be explored. A unique opportunity to understand how sailors lived on board!

Route Description

SUMMARY

The second day of your tour in Genova is dedicated to the Historic Center, a route through noble palaces, museums and symbolic landmarks of the city. The itinerary unfolds entirely on foot through the caruggi and the main historic squares, covering a total distance of about 1.7 km with a visit duration of 6 hours.

Among the main highlights are the Castello d’Albertis with the Museum of World Cultures, Palazzo Reale and the Musei Nazionali di Genova, and the majestic Cattedrale di San Lorenzo with its Treasury Museum.

Expand STEP DETAIL ⬇️

⬇️ starting point

X. Castello d’Albertis

The journey starts from the evocative Castello d’Albertis, a neo-Gothic mansion built in the 19th century by Captain Enrico Alberto d’Albertis. Today the castle hosts the Museo delle Culture del Mondo, a unique exhibition that tells the story of distant civilizations through ethnographic artifacts collected during the captain’s travels.

✨ Seeing Genoa from above this castle feels like opening a secret window onto the city: sea, port, and rooftops blend into an unforgettable view.

Inside, you will also find the Museo delle musiche dei popoli, dedicated to the traditional music of different world cultures. Beyond its artistic value, the castle offers a spectacular panoramic view over Genoa and the harbor.

❌ The hillside location of Castello d’Albertis requires a walk uphill or dedicated transport.

⬇️

A. Palazzo Reale di Genova

Continuing toward the heart of the city, you reach the Palazzo Reale (National Monument), one of Genoa’s most magnificent noble residences, today part of the Musei Nazionali di Genova. Built in the 17th century by the Balbi family and later expanded by the Savoy dynasty, it preserves splendid frescoed halls, period furnishings, and artworks by artists such as Van Dyck, Tintoretto, and Guercino. The palace is also famous for its terrace with views over the harbor.

✨ Walking through the halls of Palazzo Reale feels like entering the most powerful and lavish aristocratic Genoa, where every room tells the story of a unique maritime city in Europe.

❌ High visitor flow possible on weekends and during cruise seasons, with queues at the entrance during central hours of the day.

⬇️

B. Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola

Just a few steps from Palazzo Reale, hidden among the caruggi, lies the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola, a jewel of Genoese Baroque art. This historic residence preserves a prestigious collection of 17th-century paintings, including works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Grechetto. Alongside the paintings, the palace also houses antique furnishings and valuable ceramics.

⬇️

C. Cattedrale di San Lorenzo – Duomo di Genova

The final stop of the day is dedicated to one of the city’s symbols: the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo (National Monument), the Duomo di Genova. This extraordinary Gothic-Genoese style building, with its characteristic white and black striped faΓ§ade, preserves important treasures, including the ashes of Saint John the Baptist, the city’s patron saint.

Inside you will find the Museo del Tesoro di San Lorenzo, which preserves reliquaries and sacred objects of inestimable value, such as the Sacro Catino, which legend says could be the Holy Grail.

✨ Entering this cathedral feels like crossing centuries of faith and mystery: every stone seems to tell the deep history of Genoa.

❌ During religious events or holidays, access may be partially restricted or the interior area may be very crowded.

Route Description

SUMMARY

The third day of your tour in Genova is dedicated to discovering the most scenic and charming areas of the city and its surroundings, between the sea, historic villages and large green spaces. The itinerary is done by car and covers about 55 km, with a total visit duration of 8 hours.

Among the main highlights are the Lanterna di Genova with its museum, the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, Villa Durazzo Pallavicini in Pegli, the village of Boccadasse and the Parchi di Nervi with the Anita Garibaldi promenade.

Expand STEP DETAIL ⬇️

⬇️ starting point

X. Lanterna di Genova

The itinerary begins at one of Genoa’s ultimate symbols: the Lanterna, the city’s historic lighthouse, standing 77 meters tall and guiding sailors into the harbor for centuries. It is the third tallest lighthouse in the world still in operation and offers an extraordinary panoramic view over the port and the sea.

✨ From the top of the city’s most iconic lighthouse, Genoa opens up in a single breathtaking view of sea, port, and endless horizon.

❌ Access can be complex due to pedestrian routes and port road sections, not ideal for tight schedules or quick visits.

Next to the Lanterna is the Museo della Lanterna, which tells the story of the lighthouse and Genoa’s maritime importance over the centuries. It can be reached via a scenic 800-meter walk crossing ancient walls and fortifications.

πŸ“Œ The Museo della Lanterna is available by request. You can find the phone number in the Google Maps listing accessible from the table link.

⬇️

A. Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno

We continue the itinerary toward the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, one of the most spectacular cemeteries in Europe. This 19th-century cemetery is a true open-air museum, featuring sculptures and funerary monuments of extraordinary beauty.

Here rest notable figures such as Fabrizio De AndrΓ©, Giuseppe Mazzini, and the famous Constance Lloyd, wife of Oscar Wilde. Along the pathways, visitors can admire works by renowned sculptors in a moving and evocative setting.

❌ The visit is much longer than it may initially seem and requires at least 1 hour to be properly explored.

⬇️

B. Villa Durazzo Pallavicini – After admiring the Lanterna, we head toward Pegli, a western district of Genoa, to visit Villa Durazzo Pallavicini, one of the most beautiful historic parks in Italy. This 19th-century scenic garden is a masterpiece of Romanticism, featuring lakes, small temples, artificial caves, and theatrical natural scenery.

Inside the villa is also the Museo di Archeologia Ligure, which preserves prehistoric and Roman artifacts discovered in the region.

⬇️

C. Boccadasse

After immersing yourself in history, it’s time to discover one of Genoa’s most picturesque corners: Boccadasse, an ancient fishing village with timeless charm.

Its colorful houses, small harbor, fishing boats, and relaxed atmosphere make Boccadasse perfect for a romantic stroll. Here you can also enjoy a break, tasting artisanal gelato or Ligurian focaccia with a sea view.

❌ Very crowded on weekends and at sunset, making it difficult to find space for photos or stops during peak hours.

⬇️

D. Parchi di Nervi

The journey continues to Nervi, one of Genoa’s most elegant districts, famous for its historic parks. The Parchi di Nervi are a stunning green area filled with flower gardens, historic villas, and breathtaking sea views.

Inside the parks you will also find art museums such as the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, showcasing Ligurian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Museo Wolfsoniana, dedicated to decorative arts.

❌ A wide visit across gardens, museums, and the coastal promenade; it requires more time than a simple stop. For planning purposes, we considered 2 hours of visit time.

⬇️

E. Nervi

The final stop of the day is Nervi, famous for its Anita Garibaldi promenade, one of the most beautiful seaside walks in Italy. This 2 km pedestrian path runs along cliffs overlooking the sea and offers breathtaking views of the Ligurian coast. Here you can end the day with an aperitif at a seaside bar, enjoying a glass of Ligurian Vermentino paired with traditional focaccia di Recco.

✨ A seaside walk among cliffs and waves crashing below your feet, with one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Liguria.

❌ High visitor density in the late afternoon and at sunset, with continuous flow along the promenade.

To fully enjoy your 3-day itinerary in Genova, choosing where to stay is essential to optimize travel between the different areas of the city. The most strategic solution is the Porto Antico, ideal for the first day of the route: here you will be just steps away from attractions such as the Acquario di Genova, the Bigo, the Biosfera and the Galata Museo del Mare, with many accommodation options including B&Bs, hotels and apartments perfect for exploring entirely on foot.

For the second day, dedicated to the Historic Center, the caruggi area is the most convenient and immersive choice: staying between Piazza De Ferrari, Via Garibaldi and the historic streets allows you to easily reach Palazzo Reale, the Galleria di Palazzo Spinola and the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, fully experiencing the authentic atmosphere of the city.

For the third day, dedicated to the surroundings and coastline, the best areas are Nervi, Boccadasse and Pegli: here you can stay in quieter and scenic locations, ideal for enjoying the sea and nature without giving up easy access to the city center. In particular, Nervi is perfect for the Anita Garibaldi promenade and its seaside parks.

Alternatively, a balanced solution is staying between Carignano and Castelletto, elegant hillside areas offering spectacular views over the city while remaining well connected to all itinerary zones. (see also Where to sleep in Genoa: Info and Tips).
