Day 1

⬇️ starting point

X. Basilica Pontificia San Nicola

The itinerary begins at one of the most symbolic places in Bari: the Basilica Pontificia San Nicola. This magnificent example of Apulian Romanesque architecture is the spiritual heart of the city and an important pilgrimage site for Orthodox believers.

Inside, the Cripta della Basilica houses the relics of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of the city. For those who enjoy exploring history in depth, the Museo Nicolaiano offers an interesting collection of sacred objects and documents connected to the basilica.

✨ Entering the crypt of Saint Nicholas offers a truly unique atmosphere, surrounded by silence, devotion, and ancient columns illuminated by soft lighting.

❌ During summer and religious holidays, the basilica can become very crowded during the central hours of the day: it is best to visit early in the morning.

⬇️

A. Duomo di Bari

Continuing on, you arrive at the Duomo di Bari (National Monument), also known as the Cathedral of San Sabino, another masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Here it is possible to visit the Museo del Succorpo, which allows visitors to explore the underground archaeological remains, including an early Christian basilica. The Museo Diocesano and the Museo della Cattedrale display precious works of sacred art, bearing witness to the long history of the Diocese of Bari.

⬇️

B. Castello Svevo di Bari

The morning ends with a visit to the majestic Castello Svevo, a medieval fortress that tells the story of Bari from the Norman period to the Aragonese era. Inside, the Gipsoteca displays casts of sculptures and architectural decorations.

For those looking for a more immersive experience, the Bari Sotterranea tour allows visitors to discover the city’s oldest foundations, with archaeological finds dating back to Roman times.

✨ The imposing walls of the Castello Svevo offer one of the most scenic medieval views in Bari Vecchia, especially while crossing the entrance bridge.

📌 Bari Sotterranea can be visited by reservation only. We have not included opening hours in the table because they vary depending on bookings. You can find the phone number in the clickable Google Maps listing linked in the table.

❌ Between the castle and Bari Sotterranea, the visit may take much longer than expected: consider whether to do both experiences on the same day.

Day 2

⬇️

C. Palazzo Fizzarotti

The beginning of the second day is dedicated to one of Bari’s most fascinating buildings, the Palazzo Fizzarotti. This jewel in Venetian Neo-Gothic style is one of the finest testimonies to the city’s bourgeois wealth and features interiors decorated with frescoes and lavish details.

📌 Palazzo Fizzarotti can be visited by reservation only. You can find the phone number in the clickable Google Maps listing linked in the table.

⬇️

D. Giardino Garibaldi

After admiring the palace, the route continues toward one of the city’s green corners, the Giardino Garibaldi, located in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi. Here you can enjoy a pleasant break surrounded by centuries-old trees and commemorative statues.

⬇️

E. Palazzo Mincuzzi

Continuing the walk, you arrive at the Palazzo Mincuzzi, a symbol of Bari’s Liberty style architecture. This elegant building, once home to a luxury department store, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Bari.

⬇️

F. Piazza Umberto I

The itinerary continues to Piazza Umberto I, where you will find elegant gardens and the monument dedicated to Umberto I di Savoia. Here you can also admire the Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Southern Italy.

⬇️

G. Lungomare Nazario Sauro

The afternoon continues with a walk along the charming Lungomare Nazario Sauro, one of the most beautiful seaside promenades in Italy, offering views over the Adriatic Sea and the silhouette of the ancient walls of Bari Vecchia.

✨ At sunset, the seafront becomes one of the most atmospheric spots in the city.

⬇️

H. Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto

The final stop of the day is the Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto, located inside the Palazzo della Provincia. Here you can admire a rich collection of paintings and artworks, with special attention given to Apulian artists from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.

❌ If you have limited time, consider the full visit only if you are truly interested in art: the collection requires more time than it may seem.

Route Description

SUMMARY

The focus of this itinerary is the most complete face of Bari, where sea, Art Nouveau architecture, historic theatres, and archaeological layers intertwine in a continuous route between the coastline and the urban center.

The route connects the monumental seafront with symbolic buildings such as the Teatro Petruzzelli and the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese, reaching the most authentic areas of the port and the old town, among fortifications, lively squares, and archaeological sites.

The route, entirely walkable, runs between the seafront and the city center for about 3.9 km and includes 10 main stops with several integrated sub-stops, for a total of approximately 6 hours of sightseeing.

Expand STEP DETAIL ⬇️

I/X. Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza

The day begins with a relaxing walk along the Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza, one of the most beautiful and atmospheric streets in Bari. This stretch of coastline offers breathtaking views over the Adriatic Sea and the city skyline.

Here you will also find the Kursaal Santalucia, a historic Liberty-style theatre and cinema, recently restored and now used for cultural events and performances.

✨ This promenade offers one of the most elegant views of Bari: open sea on one side and historic architecture on the other, especially in the morning when the city is still quiet.

⬇️

A. Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese

Continuing inland, you reach the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese, an imposing and symbolic building constructed in the early 20th century to celebrate the creation of the largest aqueduct in Europe. The interiors are a masterpiece of decorations and mosaics inspired by medieval art and classical architecture.

⬇️

B. Teatro Petruzzelli

The Teatro Petruzzelli is one of the largest and most important opera houses in Italy. With its elegant façade and lavish interiors, it is the cultural heart of Bari. Destroyed by a fire in 1991, it was faithfully rebuilt and now hosts opera performances, concerts, and high-level shows.

✨ Stepping inside the Petruzzelli is a journey into Italy’s great opera tradition: the golden hall and its scenic ceiling create an impressive theatrical effect from the very first glance.

⬇️

C. Teatro Margherita

On the seafront stands the striking Teatro Margherita, a rare example of a theatre built on stilts over the water. Today it is used as an exhibition space for contemporary art shows and multimedia installations.

✨ The structure suspended over the water gives the impression of a theatre floating on the sea, making it one of the most unusual and photographed buildings on Bari’s waterfront.

⬇️

D. Piazza Libertà

After the theatres, the route enters the modern heart of the city with a stop at Piazza Libertà, surrounded by historic buildings such as the Palazzo del Governo and the Teatro Comunale Niccolò Piccinni, the oldest theatre in Bari. Walking along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, you can admire elegant palaces and historic cafés that reflect Bari’s transformation into a major bourgeois city.

❌ A very exposed and busy area: the value of this stop is mainly as a transition between the theatres and the old town, rather than a long visit destination.

⬇️

E. Museo Civico Bari

The Museo Civico di Bari is a small gem that tells the story of the city through collections of documents, historical objects, and photographs. Perfect for those who want to deepen their knowledge of Bari and its traditions.

❌ An interesting but very quick visit: if you are short on time, it can be skipped without missing essential parts of the tour.

⬇️

F. Palazzo Simi

Just a short walk from the museum, you find Palazzo Simi, a historic residence that now hosts an archaeological research center. Here you can see remains of ancient Byzantine and medieval structures, evidence of Bari’s layered history.

⬇️

G. Fortino di Sant’Antonio

The journey continues with a scenic walk to the Fortino di Sant’Antonio, a terrace offering incredible views over the coastline. Descending toward the port, you reach the Molo Sant’Antonio, where you can feel the authentic maritime atmosphere of the city. Finally, you stop at Piazza Mercantile, one of the liveliest squares in Bari, perfect for a coffee break or an aperitif.

✨ The square truly comes alive at sunset: with its bars, warm lights, and constant movement, it is one of the most vibrant spots in the old town.

⬇️

H. Museo Archeologico di Santa Scolastica

One of the most important stops of the tour is the Museo Archeologico di Santa Scolastica, which preserves artifacts telling the story of Bari from the earliest Peucetian settlements to the Middle Ages. Next to it, the Area Archeologica di San Pietro offers an extraordinary testimony of the city’s origins.

✨ The museum route allows you to read Bari as a true “layer upon layer” city, from ancient origins to the medieval period.

📌 As you can see in the table, the Museo Archeologico di Santa Scolastica has very particular opening hours, so plan accordingly. You can find the phone number in the clickable Google Maps listing linked in the table.

❌ If you are short on time, the museum can be demanding: it is best suited for those who want a deeper historical understanding of the city.

⬇️

I. Faro Borbonico

The final stop of the route is the Faro Borbonico, located in the port area. This historic signal tower is a symbol of Bari’s connection with the sea. From here, you can enjoy a spectacular sunset over the Adriatic Sea, a perfect way to conclude the itinerary before dinner.

Sleeping

During a 3-day stay in Bari, it is worth carefully choosing where to stay in order to fully enjoy both the historic and modern parts of the city without wasting time on transportation.

The most immersive option is undoubtedly the historic center (Bari Vecchia) or the seafront area: here you are in the heart of the Bari experience, among ancient alleys, main monuments, and seaside walks, all within just a few minutes on foot.

Alternatively, the Murat district and the Central Station area offer a more modern and practical choice, ideal if you prefer newer accommodations, full services, and quick connections to the airport and other parts of the city, while still keeping the center within easy reach.
